Building a Birch Bark Mosaic End Table - Stay Tuned for 2011 date

In this six hour workshop, participants learn the basic techniques of rustic twig joinery and birch bark & twig ornamentation.  Each student will build a twig end table with a birch bark mosaic top to take home at the end of the day.  The tables will be designed to accept and cradle a glass top (not supplied).

The workshop will be held at the artist’s studio near Lanark, Ontario.

Students will construct a birch bark mosaic table from materials and fasteners supplied by Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft. The frame wood will already be trimmed and cut to length. Dean will talk about collecting raw material, drilling and construction techniques, mosaic design, the use of jigs to make the process simpler and how to finish the table after allowing the piece to dry.

This workshop is an excellent introduction to building rustic furniture, or a fun next-step for those who have some experience building rustic or twig furniture.

Workshop fee includes all materials, GST, and lunch. No prerequisite. Students must assemble tool kit per Tool list provided at registration. Participants must be in good health and able to perform moderate manual labor.

Creating Birch Bark Picture Frames - July 16, 2011.

In this half day workshop, participants learn the basic techniques required to work with birch bark and twig to ornament rustic woodcraft. Each student will decorate and take home an 8” X 10” frame to be used as a picture frame or mirror.

The workshop will be held at the artist’s home studio near Lanark, Ontario.

The workshop begins with a short introductory talk about the instructor’s experience with rustic woodcraft. We will discuss safety and proper use of tools, the collection of raw materials, the use of simple techniques to make the process simpler, and how to finish the frame.

Students will ornament and complete an 8” X 10” picture frame with materials supplied by Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft. We’ll work with birch bark, pine cones, acorns, twigs and other natural materials, learning how to prepare, attach, and finish them. The same techniques can be applied to the ornamentation of rustic furniture.

At the end of the workshop, students will have an ornamented frame ready to be oiled and to have a piece of glass inserted. Reflective glass fits into the frame to create an ornamented rustic mirror, or clear glass creates an ornamented picture frame ready to receive a photo, print or painting. This workshop is an excellent introduction to rustic woodcraft, or a fun half-day with a new project design for those who have some experience building rustic furniture.

The workshop fee includes all materials and HST. A Student Tool list is provided at registration. No previous woodworking experience is required. Students must be in good health, able to handle sharp tools and perform moderate manual labor. Maximum 8 students.

Building a Rustic Armchair - July 23, 2011

In this one-day workshop, participants learn the basic techniques to build an armchair in the bent-willow style. Each student will build an armchair to take home at the end of the day.

The workshop will be held at the artist’s home studio near Lanark, Ontario.

The workshop begins with a short introductory talk about the instructor’s experience with rustic furniture building. We will discuss safety and the proper use of tools, the collection of raw materials and finishing techniques.

Students will construct an armchair from materials and fasteners supplied by Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft. The wood will already be trimmed and pre-worked to the required suppleness, with the exception of a few pieces with which students will practice wood preparation techniques.

Students will build the chair frame in the morning; in the afternoon, students will wrap the chair frame with long slim branches to form the arms and back hoop, then add the seat and back bars.

If students are experienced in the use of a drill and hammer they can expect to finish their chair before the end of the day. Novice builders can expect their chair to be at least 75% complete by the end of the workshop, and they will have the skills, confidence and materials with which to complete their chair in a few hours at home.

Students are welcome to bring a friend to assist them in the afternoon, when a second pair of hands can make the work easier and quicker.

The workshop fee includes all materials, HST, and lunch. Previous woodworking or crafting experience is recommended. Students must assemble tool kit per Tool list provided at registration. Participants must be in good health and able to perform moderate manual labor.

This workshop is a rigorous but rewarding eight hours. From past experience, we can promise students that they will go home tired but happy with their new skills and chair.

Building a Rustic Headboard - Stay Tuned for 2011 date


In this one-day workshop, participants learn the basic techniques to build a headboard in the bent-willow style to fit a queen size or smaller bed. Each student will build a headboard to take home at the end of the day.
The workshop will be held at the artists’ home studio near Lanark, Ontario.

Students will construct a headboard from materials and fasteners supplied by Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft. The wood will already be trimmed and pre-worked to the required suppleness, with the exception of a few pieces with which students will practice wood preparation techniques.

After preparing the frame wood and constructing and bracing the frame, students will wrap the frame with long slim branches to form the arching hoop, and then add the infill design of their choice.

If students are experienced in the use of a drill and hammer they can expect to finish their headboard before the end of the day.
